You may or not be aware of the incoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulations coming into force on 25th May 2018. These new regulations are simply an extension and EU unification of the current data protection laws already in place across most countries, and applies to all residents of the 28 EU member states, including the UK.
What does this mean for me? Essentially, very little. We already respect your privacy, and, in full accordance with current legislation and regulations, take all necessary measures to protect all of your personal data that we hold. Over the next few weeks, in preparation for the new regulations, we will be making the following minor changes across the site:
- Account deletions as always can be requested via. email (using the email address associated with your account) directly to [email protected]. We usually deal with all requests within 2-3 days, and will notify you of any delay. The GDPR provides a 'right to be forgotten', meaning that upon deletion of your account, any data that could personally identify you must be deleted from our services. With this in mind, with the best interests of all users on the site, we will continue with our policy of not deleting any content posted by a user, but will instead anonymise any content completely.
- From May 22nd, you will also be able to request for all of your account data to be exported into XML format, in accordance with your 'right to data portability'.
- Whenever we make any changes to our Terms of Service or Privacy Policy, we will now notify you both via. email (if you have agreed to receive site mailings) and when you next visit the site of the changes, and prompt you to agree to the updated terms. As always, if you choose to disagree with any terms, you should immediately stop using the service.
- We are going to ensure complete transparency over how we store data in cookies on your device, with improved visibility of cookie notices and a clearer Cookies Policy.
If you have any queries over these changes, feel free to get in touch.
