Does First West Yorkshire need more variation? (1 Viewer)

Does First West Yorkshire need more different types of buses? All the buses seem to be Wright bodied Volvos of sorts, but we also have Wright bodied Scanias and ALX400 Volvos. Only others are E400s (orig and MMC bodied)
No. They don't. Fleet standardisation meaning that maintenance is the same and there is no special parts needed for certain vehicles. Also, you've forgotten about the Optare Solos, Transbus Dennis Darts and Streetlites found at depots around West Yorkshire (e.g. Halifax and Huddersfield). Don't count on anything else of variation in the future. And on the livery side, Olympia is the fleet standard with most vehicles in service being in it - with anything in Barbie eventually being repainted or withdrawn.

First Aberdeen was at its best when the fleet was standardised between 2001 - 2004 ( we only had 155 B10BLE's, 18 Leyland Olympians, 6 B7LA's and B7TL's), the fleet is still quite reliable now but no where near as standardised with 26 Streetlites, 25 E500's, 24 B7RLE's, 23 E300's, 21 B10BLE's, 21 B7LA's, 12 B9TL's, 8 Tridents, 7 E200MMC's and 4 Vanhool A330's. I think Standardisation is bad at enthusiasts point of view as most like there to be a large mix of types but good at companies point of view as it means they need less sets of spare parts etc.

When it comes to variation of fleet, no one does it better than London United. LU's Hounslow Depot (AV) run the H98 (Hounslow to Hayes End) you can get anything from E200s and electric Optare Metrocities to Scania Omnicities, E400s, darts and tridents, of varying lengths and degrees of maintenance. Ithink I've seen a Gemini 3 MK1 on there once also.

Streetlites are included in 'Wright bodied things' and we don't have Dennis Darts anymore. The solos are for free city bus and operate in Bradford I think but yeah i forgot about them.
Yeah i get the maintenence point so :D

First West Yorkshire is one of the highest profit making divisions of First Bus. Leeds makes the most money, followed by Bradford, Halifax & Todmorden with Huddersfield being lowest (simply because of short routes/lack of spread). There is no such need for any type of variation between the buses, Volvo/Wright combination works well here, our drivers and engineers like them and have been working with them for over 10+ years now so new products may not always be welcome... Depots such as Halifax/Todmorden & Huddersfield need proper buses such as Volvo/Wrights because of the type of terrain and routes that they operate where buses such as Enviro 400's. StreetDecks etc wouldn't be suitable. Also because the fleet is so standardised means that repairs, parts etc are easier and cheaper because some depots have their own moulds for particular wright body parts etc. It all comes down to cost and suitability at the end of the day.

Hounslow garage doesn't have any MK1 Gemini 3 B5LH's. Only Hounslow Heath (285/116) However all other LU garages aside from Park Royal have B5LH's.
