Maps Westcombe Down (1 Viewer)

Welcome to my latest mapping project, Westcombe Down. Although I have taken some time off the editor, to focus on the B7TL, as that nears releasing stage, I though maybe it was time to have a little dabble back in the editor. Hence, it got me hooked and I have decided this is something I would like to finish :)

I want to hang off the details for now, as I have a history of changing my plans, but I will express some key details:

  • The map will currently feature two routes, with the addition of another two, near after. The two routes in the initial release will be suburban, housing routes operated by Stagecoach branded 'The Link'. Numbered 16 & 17, they run from a housing area, into a small town named Westcombe. They follow a fairly complex route, making it all the more challenging for drivers.
  • The map is themed around the South Downs, however set in Kent, and although follows a largely Kentish and Sussex theme, may contain various layouts which are more commonplace elsewhere in the UK.

A few things I'd like to kindly ask of people reading, and wanting to comment on this thread:
  • Criticism is not a problem, however please keep it in a relatively kind nature.
  • Asking for bayta (beta) copies is a real problem. The point of a beta is for testing purposes and not just as an early copy of it, and I am fairly sure who I want as testers :)
  • Asking for release dates is generally frowned upon, so save yourself the trouble of being moaned at and don't ask.
  • Pestering with questions that are needless, or plain stupid are not advised.
Hope you enjoy my creations ;)

I said based, as in it's inspired

yep he's got a point
Not wanting to sound a bit rude, but I do live in Orpington, and I see nothing of Orpington in it :P

Anyway, back on the topic, it is based in Kent, to a point, although I am not sure how to represent a Kentish Town, so I just done this and am gonna see where it leads. Once it's into the countryside it will be more identifiable as Kent...

I notice some of the building textures have prominent pedestrians/bystanders or parked vehicles in them (particularly that fella in the blue top who's been tiled and that car outside Starbucks), are these going to be edited out because I think feel it detracts from an otherwise polished feel?

I am not sure. I am not to sure about them. They are from @btv pack, and so it's up to him. There isn't really any alternatives.

Sorry for constantly doing this, but I am still not happy with what I have built. I suspect that tonight I will 'bomb' the map for a fifth time :Park Just think, everytime I do it becomes better than before. Hopefully this time I'll be happy with it.

I think my main issue is the graduation of a suburban area to a countryside. I try to switch between a built up town and open countryside too quickly, so I know now to let it graduate slower.

Leading from your mistakes is the best way foreward I believe.

Some of the housing areas look similar to the larger estates like around Tubenden Lane.
But if it was based on Orpington, there would be red buses everywhere except for 2 arriva services (402 Bromley to Tonbridge via Locksbottom and Green Street Green and 477 Orpington Station to Bluewater via St.Mary Cray)

Well, seeing as I live in Petts Wood, I suspect some area's may resemble this, although Westcombe sits pretty much on the border. You may occasionally see glimpses of LT routes in the centre of Westcombe, however once out of Westcombe you are firmly in regional territory :P

So, I have decided to have quite a large shift around. All the routes now start at Westcombe Retail Park, rather than in the town centre. The town is being made much larger, and busier making it a lot tougher to navigate.

Also, the two longer routes, 40 & 56 go direct to the town centre, via a sort of ring road. Whereas the other two routes, 16 & 17, go a long way round, through housing complex's. This means they only go 5 minutes or so past the town centre making them basically from the Retail Park to the Town Centre.

With all these changes, it also means that no buses actually terminate in the town. With them either going to the hospital, or other places in surrounding streets.

Not really anything to show off about...

@Kieron - Ive been watching this thread for a while now, when you started it and i have to say, this actually looks amazing. Its the little details that can make the difference. To step it up abit, to make it stand out from other maps, have you thought about playing with different pavement textures? It would give the map a more authentic feel to it. It's suprising how much of a difference it makes to the map by playing around with textures. Keep up the good work buddy :)

Thanks for the kind words. Actually means quite a lot to hear it from a well tuned developer such as yourself :)

On the note of textures, after I redid the ground textures, I realised that it might be difficult to find some. So I intend to go and take some photographs myself to use as textures. The cul de sac I live on has enough pavevent types to be sufficient so I just gotta go out and take some pics...

Ok. Fair enough. Thanks for the compliment aswell. Also have a look on www.textures.com for some pavement textures aswell. On there aswell you can find some grunge map/weathering effects to make the textures realistic aswell and more used aswell, unless the look your looking for is thats its just been resurfaced or relayed. Keep up the work as always :)
